CPR All Stars 6-5 Tongham Predators
Curley Park Rangers extended their unbeaten streak at 'the fortress' with a hard fought 11 goal thriller over Tongham Predators.
Once again CPR never really got into their stride, but walked away from the game extremely happy that they disposed of 2nd placed Tongham to earn a valuable 3 points.
The team lined up as follows:
GK: Kevany LB: Barby CB:Hastings CB: Morris RB: Ross CM: Dunnage CM: Rolt LM: Parslow RM: Stroud CF: Rice ST : McMillan
Subs: Goggin, Adolphous
CPR were without 5 players due to various reasons. Finlay was out with a hamstring problem, Lloyd-Bisley had still not recovered from his broken foot, Marsh was stuck at work, Honeywood was unavailable due to family reasons and Nott was out with illness.
At their expense, Morris was able to start his first game of the season at centre back, Barby stepped in to fill in at left back and Ross started at right back.
The game kicked off withCurley Park racing into the lead. Stroud beat a couple of players and crossed deep towards the back post, for Parslow to convert from close range.
In previous games CPR's fragility at the back had been exposed, and they conceded soon after taking the lead. A corner led to a free header, and the ball hit the back of the net via a touch from the attacker on the line.
Curley Park 's tendency to leak in goals had been saved from their ability to score, and minutes later they regained their lead. Stroud found space in the box, and he laid the ball on a plate for Parslow to coolly curl the ball into the right hand corner of the net.
But seconds later their advantage had been wiped, and this time Kevany was at fault for the goal. The left midfielder struck the ball from distance, and Kevany could not prevent the ball from hitting the back of the net despite getting hands to it.
But CPR continued to pressurise the Tongham goal, and soon re took the lead for the 3rd time. The ball was deflected to an unmarked Dunnage at the back post, who leathered the ball into the goal to restore CPR’s lead.
But once again CPR could not hold on, and their shaky defence was really letting them down. Tongham levelled the game for the third time, a matter of seconds after the restart. A ball over the top was not cleared, and the Tongham attacker rifled the ball off the post and into the net to restore parity.
And this topsy turvy game took another twist as CPR fell behind for the first time in the game, and Kevany once again was at fault. An ambitious effort from the Tongham left back struck the bar, and the ball rebounded off Kevany's head and into the net.
It looked like CPR were going to go into half time a goal down, but a moment of magic from Parslow ensured they didn't. Parslow jinxed past a number of clueless defenders and squared the ball to Stroud, who slid in to claim his first goal of the game.
That touch was the last of a half which saw 8 goals, with either sides defence unable to cope with the opposing attacks.
CPR were looking extremely poor in possession of the ball, and were not playing to the standard that they knew they could. Nevertheless they went into the break all square with their opponents, and the game could easily go either way.
CPR were still not playing their fluid football that saw them defeat league leaders Hartley Whitney, but they retook the lead just after the break. Dunnage took a corner from the right, and his cross was met by the leaping Hastings, who headed the ball into the back of the net.
And CPR built on this lead minutes later to score their 6th of the game. A ball over the top by Dunnage was latched onto by Stroud, who smashed the ball into the left hand corner of the goal.
CPR's 2 goal advantage was halved when they let in their 5th goal of the game. The defence stood off the Tongham attacker, who unleashed a tame effort towards goal. But Kevany misjudged the balls speed and once again could only push the ball into the net.
Either side had further chances, with McMillan in particular missing a few chances for CPR. Tongham too had a couple more chances, with Morris and Hastings battling to ensure that CPR didn't let in any more goals.
CPR however wanted the result that bit more and their fight and determination was typified by the enthusiastic performances of Goggin and Adolphous, both of which were battling with tenacity and bravery in order to keep Tongham at bay.
And Tongham could not break through the CPR defence to make the game all square, and the final whistle was met by relief and extreme satisfaction by the CPR players.
Despite never reaching the level they knew they could, CPR were still able to walk away with victory, a mark of a good side. Despite Tongham sitting in 2nd place, CPR went into the game wanting a win, and they achieved this aim.
CPR's back line was severely weakened by the absences of Honeywood, Nott, Finlay and Marsh, and if they are going to meet their ambitions of winning the league they must stop leaking in goals.
Man of the match from Ken went to Goggin, who's bravery and energy when he came on helped secure a shaky CPR back line and ensured that CPR walked away with all 3 points.
