Arsene Wenger: In Or Out?
Arsenal have had a turbulent season. Despite claiming 75
points, Arsenal were unable to match the progress of their rivals and thus fell
to a lowly 5th placed finish.
The league and the Champions League are Arsenal fans top
priority. Unfortunately for Wenger, a humbling defeat to Bayern Munich in the
last 16 of the Champions League only added to their disappointing season. Thus,
Arsene Wenger has come under fire.
With Arsenal set to decide about Wenger's future tomorrow, The Football Addick answers one of the biggest questions in world football: Arsene Wenger, In or
out?
To answer the question, this article will give reasons for
both sides of the argument. Should Wenger be relieved of his managerial
duties? Or did his FA Cup victory save his job? Find out my verdict in the following
pages.

Arsene Wenger: In or Out? |
IN:
Club Legend:
Arsene Wenger is one of the best, if not the best manager in
Arsenal's history. He took the reins of a struggling team in 1996, and quickly
transformed them into one of England's best clubs. In total, he has won 16
trophies at Arsenal, including three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups.
He also led his team to an unbeaten Premier League season in 2003/2004;
something that may never be repeated. Although his performances in the past
decade and been disappointing, he is still a club legend.
Remarkable Consistency:
Finishing in the top four is essential to Premier League
clubs. Not only does it guarantee a large sum of money, but it also provides
clubs with the opportunity to compete for the world’s most prestigious trophy:
The Champions League. Remarkably, before this season's 5th place finish, Wenger
had guided Arsenal to 20 consecutive top four finishes. In that time span, no
other club has finished in the top four more than The Gunners. That is
remarkable consistency.
No Other Options?
Replacing Wenger will be no easy task. If Arsenal choose to
look for a foreign manager, they could look to Luis Enrique or Thomas Tuchel,
who have lost their jobs recently at Barcelona and Dortmund respectively. If
they look for an English manager the options are even narrower, with Eddie Howe
perhaps the main candidate. Will any of these be an upgrade on Wenger?
Positive Signs:
Whereas most the season was extremely disappointing, Arsenal
did show signs of promise as they finished the season strongly. Their final ten
games in all competitions brought about nine wins, including victories against
Manchester City, Manchester United, Everton and in the FA Cup Final against
Chelsea. Reverting to 5 at the back seems to have brought about an upturn in
form; showing that there are positive signs going into next season.

Could former Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel replace Wenger at Arsenal? |
OUT:
Lack of Success in Recent Years:
After an impeccable start to life at Arsenal. Wenger's
managerial career seems to have stagnated in the past decade. His first ten
years in North London brought about eleven trophies, including his three
Premier League titles. All Wenger has won in the past eleven years is three FA
Cups and two Community Shields. For a team of Arsenal's stature, that is not
good enough.
Need A Change:
Most Arsenal fans feel that the club needs a change.
Although they respect Wenger and all that he is achieved, many believe that
Arsenal will not progress further under his leadership. Therefore, it could be
argued that taking a gamble on a proven foreign manager would be much preferable
than staying under Wenger's guidance. Given their failures in recent years to
win major trophies, it is easy to see why. Consistency is not good enough. Some
feel that Arsenal needs a change.
Budget:
Although funds have seemingly been available to him, Wenger has
shown a reluctance to splash the cash. This had a huge negative affect on
Arsenal, and thus they have fallen well behind their rivals. Although they have
brought in a few marquee signings in recent years, this is not enough for
Arsenal fans who want to see their manager bring in star signings year after
year.
Premier League And Champions League:
Both the Premier League and Champions League is of paramount
importance to Arsenal fans. Wenger has not won the league since 2004, and in
truth he has not been close ever since. In Europe, Arsenal have not progressed
past the last 16 of the Champions League since 2010. His performances in these competitions
have been unacceptable.
Verdict:
Out. Although Wenger has achieved so much at Arsenal, their
performances in the past decade has not been up to the standard that many
expect of the North London club. The fans have quite clearly had enough, and it
has got to the point where the clubs fans are divided about Wenger’s future.
Wenger is a legend, but the disgruntlement at Arsenal is epidemic and
irreversible. He must go.
