Tongham Predators 5-7 CPR All Stars

Curley Park Rangers next test saw them travel to Tongham, a team they beat 6-5 in the reverse fixture earlier on in the season. Tongham managed to score 5 again, but CPR managed to score more; rattling in 7 after being 5-2 down.

Curley Park Rangers walked away from the game unhappy that they managed to concede 5 again to poor opposition, but were also relieved that they were able to mount an incredible comeback after being 5-2 down.

The team lined up as follows:
GK: Dunnage LB: Barby CB: Nott CB: Hastings RB: Ross CM: Rolt CM: Honeywood LM: Parslow RM:
Stroud CF: Rice ST: McMillan

Subs: Morris

Many CPR players were missing for the game, most notably goalkeeper Kevany who had been struck down by illness. Dunnage was given the gloves in the first half, with Rice replacing him in the second. Other absentees included Finlay, Lloyd-Bisley, Adolphous, Goggin and Marsh, with the latter preferring to watch the Manchester derby on TV instead of playing.

The game kicked off as per usual, with CPR breaking the deadlock. McMillan was the man who got it, showing good composure to slot the ball beyond the reach of the keeper.

And it was soon 2-0, with Tongham unable to keep up with the lightning tempo that CPR had set in the games early stages. McMillan surged down the wing, and his cross was met and tapped home by Stroud; to bring up his 10th goal of the season.

But Tongham soon halfed the deficit, with depute goalkeeper Dunnage at fault. He misjudged the pace of the ball and was left hapless as his mistake was punished by the Tongham attacker, who slotted the ball into an empty net.

The goal seemed to rattle CPR, and they now looked shaky in all areas of the pitch. Tongham capitalised and restored parity, with a deflected strike wrong footing Dunnage and nestling into the back of the net.

And Tongham completed their mini comeback seconds later as they punished yet more defensive errors by Curley Park. The CPR defence was getting in all sorts of trouble, and once again they were punished and found themselves behind after making such a good start.

CPR were rattled, and they were starting to argue amongst themselves. Hastings seemed to take out the Tongham attacker outside the box, at least by a metre or two, but the referee pointed to the spot. The attacker outwitted Dunnage and placed the ball in the opposite corner to Dunnages’ despairing dive.

And yet there was still more misery for CPR. Stroud was booked for what seemed like a fair challenge and McMillan too was booked for a challenge that didn’t show any malice what so ever.

Tongham were playing a route 1 style of football, and the CPR defence simply had no answer to this tactic. Despite their best efforts, the defence could not keep Tongham out, and it was soon 5-2.

Dunnage seemed to gather the ball comfortably, but dropped it under heavy pressure by the on rushing Tongham attackers. Despite efforts to retain possession of the ball, Dunnages mistake was once again punished, and Tongham from being 2-0 down, had brought it back to 5-2 up after just 30 minutes.

But CPR soon sprang to life, and they seemed to forget about all their issues and surged back to reality. Rolt's throw in was flicked on by Stroud, and McMillan was on hand to convert at the back post to score his second of the game.

And it was soon 5-4, and CPR's period of domination was bringing them back into the game. A free kick was lumped into the box by Rolt, and Hastings was there to out jump the keeper and head into the empty net.

With Tongham looking like they were going to hold on until half time, McMillan delivered a sucker punch which well and truly knocked the wind out of their sales. After a mini scramble involving Parslow in the box, the ball fell to McMillan from close range, and there was no doubt as he coolly rolled the ball underneath the keeper and into the net.

That was the final kick in what was a crazy first half, which saw an incredible 10 goals. Morris came on for Barby at left back, and Rice took the gloves off Dunnage, with the latter coming on pitch into the CF position.

CPR came back out with a positive mentality, and Ken's half time pep talk seemed to work wonders for his struggling CPR side.

After prolonged pressure, Stroud surged down the left wing, evading 3 tackles in the process. He then delivered a teasing left footed cross, and on hand once again was the flying McMillan, who met the ball fractions in front of the keeper to head into the empty net.

CPR had delivered a magnificent comeback, and were still not playing their best football. However their play was enough to frustrate the Tongham coaching staff, who was evidently annoyed at the CPR team, branding them insults such as 'ignorant' and 'pathetic.' Hypocrite can be one word to describe him. Disgraceful is another.

In their attempts to go all out for a winner, Tongham were sending huge numbers of men forward. But the CPR defence had transformed into a resilient outfit, and were repelling wave after wave of Tongham attack with ease. Morris was putting in a very good shift at left back, and Nott was also pivotal in keeping Tongham at bay.

And CPR finished the game off with roughly 5 minutes to go, to score 7 or more goals for an incredible 4th time this season. Of course it was McMillan who got the goal, bagging his 5th of the game in the process. A Dunnage long throw was met by McMillan, who rose to loop the ball over the keeper and into the top right hand corner of the net, queuing dancing celebrations involving Stroud and himself.

That's how it finished and once again CPR had shown that despite having one of their off days, they can still show tremendous spirit to overcome their woes and win the match.

CPR will be particularly pleased with their defensive work rate in the second half, with their back 4 doing everything in their power and successfully bounced back from a horrendous first half performance to keep a clean sheet in the second.

Credit has to go to Dunnage and Rice, who both had a half in goal following on from Kevany's absence. Although Dunnage made a few mistakes, at the end of the day no one else volunteered to step up and take the gloves and he must be commended for that.

All in all CPR's performance was not very convincing at all, but they showed great fight and determination to battle back from 5-2 down to eventually win the game 7-5.

Man of the match was contested between Nott and McMillan, both of which had very good games. Nott was imperious at the back in the second half and was one of the main reasons why CPR were able to keep Tongham out and McMillan... Well, he scored 5.
