Arsenal 5-2 Tottenham

Breathtaking. The only word that summarises the events witnessed at the Emirates Stadium. A game in which was so decisive in shaping both teams season, with a win in the North London derby holding so much significance that it could give the winners the boost they need to look eagerly up the table rather than nervously down. For Arsenal, the game was particularly vital, with the only thing that could salvage a trouble filled season was beat their rivals and finish in the top 4. In juxtaposition, Spurs had had a terrific season, enjoying a fine run under Harry Redknapp who with a win could find themselves within touching distance of the top 2 Manchester clubs. Therefore, the game was of equal importance to both clubs - which ensured the game was bound to be a thriller.

Controversy surrounds Gareth Bale's dive
The game kicked off full of expectation from both sides. Although Tottenham went into the game favourites, you can never write off Arsenal, especially with the genius that is Robin Van Persie up front. Tottenham quickly got into their groove, cutting up an at sea Arsenal defence at will and scoring 2 quick goals, somewhat fortunately, through a huge deflection and a dubious penalty decision awarded after a clear Gareth Bale dive - which Adebayor converted clinically. Nevertheless, Tottenham had the lead, and with an Arsenal defence looking particularly fragile, it seemed as if it could’ve turned into a cricket score.

Theo Walcott fires past a hapless Brad Friedel for his second
However, this was not the case. Arsenal responded with 2 quick goals as well, through a powerful Bakary Sagna goal and a wonderful goal from the gifted left foot of RVP. Clearly buoyed by the mini fight back, Arsenal never looked back and thrived from there on in, dominating the game and making Tottenham look a shadow of their former selves. They added to their lead through Rosicky, before two quick goals from the heavily criticized Theo Walcott killed the game off. Game, set, match: Arsenal. In truth it could've been more. Arsenal had experienced a truly poor season, and had been heavily criticized throughout. The fight they showed contrasted their displays this year, and it seemed a rarity that they showed passion and determination that had eluded them all season.

This win is not just a win. It means so much more. This result has potentially saved Arsenals season. At 2-0 down, they were staring down the barrel of a humiliating defeat, providing no goal scoring threat as well as looking extremely fragile in defence. They turned it round; and all credit to them. Instead of losing, they convincingly won, which may just provide the team with the confidence and the drive they need to push on and fight for that coveted 4th position. With nothing else to fight for, the 4th spot would be a complete steal after their woes and troubles they've had this season. They won against a strong Tottenham side, and when under the cosh, performed under pressure. Their season has been rekindled as a result and who knows? Maybe this win will provide them with the much needed boost that could see them overtake their North London rivals in the Premier League? Only time will tell...
