Weekly Charlton review

Chris Powell has guided his team to a 7 point lead
with a game in hand after 26 games
Charlton vs Sheffield United - 21st January
This was a match that held key significance, not just for the Charlton fans, but for League 1 as a whole. This is the game whereby Charlton could send out a message to the league that they are not bottlers, as well as proving that they have what it takes to secure the title come May. I eagerly awaited this clash, glancing at the clock every 10 minutes or so in anticipation of this important game. When 3:00 finally swung round, my waiting was over and the anticipation i felt quickly turned into nerves.

Jacko exquisitely curled in another free kick
to earn his side 3 vital points vs Sheffield United

I know Charlton have what it takes to win the league, but playing both Sheffield clubs in the space of 2 weeks was always going to be a tricky test. However, this was the better of the Sheffield clubs. First vs second. Charlton lose, blows the title race wide open again. Charlton win, makes it all but certain that Charlton will maintain the coveted position until the rest of the season. In theory, Charlton had something to prove. As underdogs, United came to The Valley with no fear, pressure off seeing as for the first time in a while they were not expected to walk away with 3 points. But The Addicks have been strong this season and in the end - were too strong for United.

When Jacko curled in his second free kick in 2 weeks, I was ecstatic. The Sky sports commentator simply commented that it was a 'purler' and I made the judgement afterwards that it was a goal to win a football match. The free kick was stunning. 25 yards out, Jacko stepped up and did not disappoint, curling the free-kick into the top corner with slight aid of the woodwork. What a goal. However, the goal didn’t seem to surprise me. Since his arrival, Jackson has been a key figure for The Addicks, his technical ability and goal-scoring prowess being pivotal for all that's been good about The Addicks this season. What the lad lacks in pace, he makes up with footballing ability and without him, Charlton wouldn't be leading the table by such a massive margin.

Although the Darrel Russell challenge seemed to be a dark point in the game, The Charlton performance ensured every Addick walked away extremely proud of their teams performance. Although Charlton weren't as good as they have been prior to the game, their dogged display to grind out a result is the hallmark of champions. After seeing through this Sheffield double header with a maximum 6 points, surely Charlton will not throw the league title away. The desire and determination to get 3 points every game has been remarkably installed by Addicks boss, Chris Powell, which has been displayed in every game this season. So well done Chris and the lads, you've not just made me happy - but the whole of the rest side of South East London as well. Up The Addicks!
