Happy Birthday Chris Solly!

Charlton defender Chris Solly is celebrating his 21st birthday today
We’ve got Chris Solly, he’s ******* quality, we’ve got Chris Solly, he’s ******* quality! The tune rings out round the Valley every time Chris Solly steps out onto the pitch. Solly has been a key figure in a successful Charlton side this season, which has seen them propel to the top of the Npower League 1 after 25 games. He has also been able to establish himself as a fan favourite, so much so that the Charlton fans even devised a chant which saw ‘Solly’ rhyme with ‘Quality’ – Genius lyrics.

The Addicks right back turned 21 today, and to mark this special occasion - I have decided to write about the most consistent man not only in the Charlton team this season; but in the whole of League 1. Before I go any further, happy birthday Chris Solly. He has been immense at the back for Charlton this term, making even the top wingers in the league look average.

Chris broke into the team at the end of last season, and has looked a hot prospect since his debut in May 2009. Although not initially grasping the right back spot with two hands, he looked destined to make it his own some day. He has gone from strength to strength since his days as a teenager and has battled hard to ensure he has a spot in the team sheet each week. In fact, he has battled so hard that he has become the first man on the team sheet every week!

His consistency in defence is remarkable, with defensive awareness and composure on the ball, he is regularly able to flush out any opposition attack down his side. Of the 5 or so times where I’ve been able to watch him for a solid 90 minutes this season, he has easily been one of the best players on the pitch. Even when The Addicks went a man down within 10 minutes at Leyton Orient, Chris stood up to the task and put 150% in to ensure that Charlton came out with at least something in the game. Although the game was lost, Chris' performance was one of few positives, and his magnificent performance not only in this game, but throughout the course of the season has been a joy to behold.

I hate the thought of it, but only time will tell when he followers former Charlton right back Carl Jenkinson into the Premier League. At only 21 years old, Chris has showed incredible maturity and defensive quality which has made him a class apart at right back this season. In addition, the consistency he displays and passion is plain to see, which is why losing him will be such a big loss.

In conclusion, Chris has deserved this special praise from me for his solid performances whilst representing the Addicks since he made his debut in 2009. Whether it be with Charlton or another club, I have no doubt that Chris would be a competent player in the Premier League one day; such has been the quality of his performances in a red shirt. Happy birthday Chris and keep it up!

P.S - A win over Sheffield United on the weekend will be nice! Up the Addicks!
