Sheffield Wednesday vs Charlton Athletic - 14/01/2012
Match Report
Sheffield Wednesday hosted table topping Charlton in a high profile match which saw 1st play 3rd in the Npower League 1 standings. The match was destined to be an intense match, with Sheffield Wednesday’s formidable form at home matching Charlton's success on the road. It was also the small matter of Addicks legend Chris Powell marking his 1 year anniversary as manager of the club, and he was surely looking to celebrate this with an away win against a tough Wednesday side. It was Sheffield Wednesday who started off brighter, with Chris Lines' shot well saved by Addicks keeper Ben Hamer. Charlton responded with a goal, Captain fantastic Johnnie Jackson curling in a terrific free kick from 25 yards straight into the top corner, sparking Jubilance in the Charlton away end (and in the home end where my brother was sitting). That was Jackson 's 9th goal this term, an impressive tally considering he had to spend 6 weeks on the sidelines. The Owls responded well, and Gary Madine had the ball in the net for the home side, but the goal was ruled out for a foul in the build up. Chances were few and far between in the second half, but Clinton Morrison did have a header blocked on the line; one of few clear cut chances in the second half. Bradley Wright Phillips, who had a point to prove as he was currently experiencing a demoralizing goal drought, looked lively and burst through; only to see him denied by the Owls keeper. Charlton had another chance to double their goal tally when January arrival Leon Clarke neatly set loanee Darrell Russell up, but his shot was once again denied by the Owls keeper. That's the way it finished, and Charlton extended their lead at the top of League 1 to 4 points with a game in hand.
My Views
Throughout the game I was nervously refreshing my phone every few minutes or so to keep myself updated in an extremely important game. It's fair to say I was absolutely ecstatic both when Johnnie scored, as well as seeing the score with a FT sign next to it. A win at a daunting place to travel to is the hallmark of champions, and I’m sure we'll be able to close out the season with no trouble at all. These are exciting times at The Valley, and by this result, it concludes that we have what it takes to not only achieve promotion, but to break the 100 points barrier. Come on you Addicks!
