The Football Addick

It has been a while since the last update, but I am pleased to say that things are still going swimmingly for the South East London side. 8 points above the relegation zone and 10 points behind the playoffs, the season may be fizzling out into nothingness for the Addicks, but I for one am extremely pleased in our return back to the Championship. We may not accomplish the incredible feats achieved by Norwich and Southampton over the years with back to back promotions, but re-establishing ourselves as a Championship side once again was the main goal, and it looks like we've been able to achieve it.  We all dream of a team of Kermorgants!    I've only gone to see Charlton once this season, (due to work commitments on a Saturday) which was the home game vs a very poor Birmingham side that ended up 1-1. Being the football lover that I am, I started off the day as I do everyday; checking the gossip columns on both BBC Sport and Sky Sports News. In doing so, I was quite intrigued to find on BBC Sport a rumour that quoted this: 'Rodgers plans to sell 30-year-old goalkeeper Pepe Reina, centre-back Martin Skrtel, 28, left-back Jose Enrique, 27, winger Stewart Downing, 28, and midfielder Jordan Henderson, 22, in the summer.' Being connected with Liverpool as my second favourite team, it got me wondering: would I sell the players listed above, or keep them? There is no doubt that there will be comings and goings in the summer, especially so if Liverpool want to fulfil their aspirations of returning to their status as an established Premier League club. There have been those that have underperformed, excelled, or are simply not good enough, and there is reason to suggest that all those named above could be sold and replaced by better players. Underestimation. To underestimate another team can be considered a crime in Cup football. Anything can happen. An upset can easily occur. That's what so nearly happened when Premier division table toppers, Curley Park Rangers, travelled to Wokingham & Bracknell, a team who sat mid table in the division below. On paper it could be considered an easy game. CPR had trounced all in their path both in the league and cup, and the CPR camp was particularly confident today. But that confidence could easily also be described as arrogance. CPR expected an easy game, it should've been if they had played to the best of their ability, but they could never have imagined the events that unfolded. After the 14-1 thrashing of whipping boys Liss Athletic last week, this week saw the much tougher challenge of mid table side, FC Bracknell. However, due to 2 Bracknell players being sent off in a heated game against Hartley Whitney, as well as their keeper being unavailable, FC Bracknell turned up with their side seriously depleted, with only 11 men available to play. In contrast, CPR had many more players than last week as they were boosted by the returns of Nott, Barby, Goggin, Morris, Hastings and Stroud, who all returned to the side. In the closing stages of the January transfer window, arguably one of the most charismatic and controversial footballers departed the Premier League to return to Italy . There had been rumours throughout the transfer window, but on the last day of the transfer window the deal was sealed, and Mario Balotelli had traded Manchester City for AC Milan in a £19 million move. Often known for his off field antics rather than his performances on the pitch, the Italian still managed to score 30 goals in 80 appearances in a light blue shirt. But 'Super Mario' will undoubtedly go down in history for his incredible antics off the field during his time in England , and I will list his top 5 most memorable moments during his 3 seasons at Manchester City . CPR's next test was an away trip to rock bottom Liss Athletic, who CPR demolished 9-0 in the reverse fixture back in January. Liss had endured a torrid time in the league this year, not being able to pick up a single point prior to this game, as well as leaking 26 goals in 8 games. Goggin, Stroud, Barby, Hastings , Nott and Morris were all unavailable for numerous reasons, leaving CPR’s strength in depth severely weakened. The unthinkable happened. CPR played a game. Due to adverse weather conditions causing chaos on the fixture list, CPR played their first game for 6 weeks, and what a game it was. CPR travelled to Farnham to take on a Bourne side, who after seeming like the whipping boys in the early weeks of the season, had fought back and achieved comfortable 5-1 and 7-3 victories over Camberley Town and FC Bracknell respectively. Bourne had scored 12 goals in their last 2 games which meant they were dangerous opponents, and with this lingering in the back of the CPR players minds, they knew Bourne Blades were not a team who could be taken lightly.
