Premier League 2016/2017 Review: Bottom Half

Another Premier League season has come and gone. For some teams in the Premier League, the 2016/2017 season was highly successful and thus they can be happy with their efforts. However, for many teams in the league the season was tough and some will be glad that the season is over.

The Football Addick analyses the performances of all teams that finished in the BOTTOM HALF in the Premier League and rates their success out of 10.

Which teams got the highest marks in the bottom half? Which team got the lowest score of two out of ten? And who was each team's 'Star Man' and 'Disappointment' this season? Find out in the following pages.

Michail Antonio scored nine goals in the 2016/2017 season, seven of which came with his head

11th - West Ham United - 5/10
Having faltered in the Europa League qualifiers against the Romanian side, FC Astra, and with his side struggling in the league, Slaven Bilic’s role as manager at West Ham was seemingly under threat. However, a resurgence in form steered the club away from relegation and they finished in mid table. Nevertheless, it was still a poor season for a side with lofty ambitions.

Star Man - Mikhail Antonio
Disappointment - Simone Zaza

12th - Leicester City - 4/10
Underwhelming. Several pundits predicted that they would not replicate the standards they set last year, but few would have predicted they would battle relegation for much of the season. Claudio Ranieri's departure and Craig Shakespeare's promotion to manager steadied the ship, but fans would have expected much more.

Star Man - Kasper Schmeichel
Disappointment - Riyad Mahrez

13th - Stoke City - 5/10
It was an uneventful season for Stoke, who were never in danger of going down, but also never threatened continental qualification. But like most established Premier League clubs, their fans would have expected at least a top half finish.

Star Man - Lee Grant
Disappointment - Strikers (Wilfried Bony, Saido Berahino, Mame Biram Diouf)

The performances of Zaha and Benteke helped steer Crystal Palace to safety

14th - Crystal Palace - 6/10
Alan Pardew paid the price for a terrible opening half of the season as he was sacked as manager with Crystal Palace staring relegation in the face. Sam Allardyce was given the job of saving the club and he did just that, getting the best out of Wifried Zaha and Christian Benteke as they managed to consolidate their Premier League status.

Star Man - Wilfried Zaha
Disappointment -  Steve Mandanda

15th - Swansea City - 6/10
Swansea had FOUR managers this season. FOUR. But the Welsh club got it right with the appointment of Paul Clement, who aided by the stellar performances of Gylfi Sigurdsson, managed to steer the club away from the relegation zone.

Star Man - Gylfi Sigurdsson
Disappointment - Borja Baston

16th - Burnley - 8/10
Burnley were predicted to go straight back down to the Championship, but their strong defensive line and solid performances at home ensured that they would enjoy a second consecutive Premier League season.

Star Man - Michael Keane
Disappointment - Patrick Bamford

A poor end to the season for Watford meant Walter Mazzari was relieved of his managerial duties at the end of the season

17th - Watford - 6/10
The Hertfordshire club had a turbulent season under Walter Mazzari. Although they got the results needed to stave off relegation, many fans were unhappy with his play style and consequently he came under fire. He may have kept his job but six consecutive losses to end the season sealed the Italian's fate.

Star Man - Etienne Capoue
Disappointment - Odion Ighalo

18th - Hull City - 4/10
Poor recruitment last summer and Steve Bruce's departure meant it was always going to be a tough season Hull. Marco Silva managed to reverse their fortunes but they fell just short in their battle against the drop.

Star Man - Harry Maguire
Disappointment - Abel Hernandez

19th - Middlesbrough - 3/10
Middlesbrough had a Premier League calibre defence, with the likes of Ben Gibson helping the team to the tenth best defence in the league over the course of the season. However, across their 38 games they only notched 27 goals, meaning their attack was undoubtedly the catalyst for their relegation.

Star Man - Ben Gibson
Disappointment - Adama Traore

Jermaine Defoe scored 15 goals in the 2016/2017 season but even that was nowhere near enough for Sunderland

20th - Sunderland - 2/10
Dreadful. Miserable. Shocking. They are just a few words that can describe Sunderland's season. Without Jermaine Defoe and Jordan Pickford they would have struggled to accumulate double digits in points.

Star Men - Jordan Pickford/Jermaine Defoe

Disappointment - The rest of the team
