Charlton update: 15/03/2013

It has been a while since the last update, but I am pleased to say that things are still going swimmingly for the South East London side. 8 points above the relegation zone and 10 points behind the playoffs, the season may be fizzling out into nothingness for the Addicks, but I for one am extremely pleased in our return back to the Championship. We may not accomplish the incredible feats achieved by Norwich and Southampton over the years with back to back promotions, but re-establishing ourselves as a Championship side once again was the main goal, and it looks like we've been able to achieve it.

We all dream of a team of Kermorgants!

I've only gone to see Charlton once this season, (due to work commitments on a Saturday) which was the home game vs a very poor Birmingham side that ended up 1-1. However, despite the disappointment of outplaying a team that was 2 divisions above Charlton 2 seasons ago and only coming away with a point, there was one clear message to take away from the result. We will not get relegated this season. And rightly so.

The quality that Charlton possess is that of an established Championship side. Nothing more, nothing less. Solly, Morrison and Kermogant seem to still be the outstanding performers in the side, all of which showing that they could easily play in the Premier League in the future, Solly in particular. But I still am sceptical to some of the players ability, I believe there are some that are letting the team down. Wilson and Dervite are two that I still have huge question marks to whether they’re good enough to play at this level. They’re both versatile, and both try their hardest game in, game out, but for me, they're just not good enough. With players like this holding the team back, then promotion aspirations will have to be put on hold until they can be replaced with adequate replacements.

Wilson has not convinced me of his Championship quality
this season

And this may take a long time. Charlton just don't have the financial power to compete with the leagues big spenders. With transfer budgets in the thousands rather then the millions, Charlton have to be shrewd in the next transfer market and wise with their money if they want to build on a decent first season back in the Championship. Money must be spent on talent from the lower leagues, but if this money is spent wisely, then a playoff spot may be on the cards for next season.

But lets not get too far ahead of ourselves. Have we even secured our spot in the Championship for next season? I hope so. The home game on the weekend against Millwall is a massive game in determining Charlton's fate for this season. Lose, and we are right back in the thick of things in the scrap for relegation. But win, or even draw, and I think we’ve done it. Who knows, with 9 games to go, and only 10 points behind the playoff spot, can Charlton mount a promotion challenge? It's unlikely, but it only takes a small win streak to make big gains in the Championship, and if Charlton win 6/7 of their last 9 games, we could be in the playoff spots come the end of the season.

But that's a big if.
