Bourne Blades 2-6 CPR All Stars

The unthinkable happened. CPR played a game. Due to adverse weather conditions causing chaos on the fixture list, CPR played their first game for 6 weeks, and what a game it was.

CPR travelled to Farnham to take on a Bourne side, who after seeming like the whipping boys in the early weeks of the season, had fought back and achieved comfortable 5-1 and 7-3 victories over Camberley Town and FC Bracknell respectively.

Bourne had scored 12 goals in their last 2 games which meant they were dangerous opponents, and with this lingering in the back of the CPR players minds, they knew Bourne Blades were not a team who could be taken lightly.

The team lined up as follows:
GK: Kevany LB: Barby CB: Nott CB: Hastings RB: Honeywood CM: Adolphous CM: Rolt LM: Parslow RM: Stroud CF: Dunnage ST: Rice

Subs: Goggin, Ross, Finlay, Lloyd-Bisley, McMillan

The only absentees were Morris, who was away on holiday, and Marsh, who was the unlucky man to have been left out due to number restrictions.

CPR started the game awfully and paid the price for their woeful start. They soon went 1-0 behind after a corner flashed across the face of goal, but it was missed by everyone before being turned in at the back post.

This was the first time CPR had gone 1-0 down, and it would’ve been easy to think that the goal would deflate them further.

But all it did was motivate them, the sign of a winning team. McMillan came on for Rice in an early change, and the momentum changed immediately.

Within 5 minutes of coming on, CPR's Scottish forward had left his mark, firing into the bottom corner to restore parity.

But the most controversial incident occurred at the start of the game with the match locked at 1-1 in a complete stalemate. Stroud showed great speed to get past his man down the right, before pushing it past the keeper.

The keeper clattered into the German wingman a yard outside the box, preventing him from easily knocking the ball into an empty net. But to some of the players dismay, the goalkeeper only received a yellow card; a dubious decision which could’ve easily seen him see red.

The CPR team had overcome their awful start, and were now were pushing for another as they began to exert their dominance. Rolt spread the ball wide to Stroud from 40 yards out, and the winger outpaced his man before slotting the ball under the keeper and into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

Stroud then doubled his tally soon before the break. A free kick was cleared straight to Dunnage, who put in a peach of a ball to Stroud, and he gobbled up the opportunity as he glanced his header into the top left hand corner of the net.

That's how the half finished, and CPR were very happy with how they responded after falling behind for the first time this year in the league. But Bourne were still troubling the CPR defence, with their winger and forward in particular posing a threat to CPR’s defence.

After the restart CPR had to deal with an early wave of pressure from Bourne, but soon countered to make it 4-1 and increase the margin to 3.

McMillan, who had earlier been denied his second after a brilliant reaction save from the keeper, finally doubled his tally when he managed to slot the ball under the keeper from just inside the penalty area.

But the tie was far way from being over, and Bourne pulled a goal back roughly 15 minutes from time. A ball over the top beat all of the CPR defence, and the winger raced clear. His shot rebounded off the post, but the ball unfortunately hit Goggin trickled into the net, despite the full backs best efforts to keep it out.

But CPR once again did not let the goal faze them, and soon had their 5th. It was that man again, McMillan, who completed his hat trick. The powerful forward bundled his way through the Bourne defence, before again showing composure to roll the ball into the corner and complete his hat trick.

There was more controversy late on in the game when despite the whistle already being blown for a free kick, the winger lashed out and caught his studs on Hastings' shin. A disgusting challenge, and the winger was lucky to walk away with only a yellow card.

The game was fizzling out, and the outcome was now inevitable with 5 minutes to go. Adolphous was the man who got the 6th, and it was a long range effort. The crowd screamed 'GERRARD' as he steadied himself, and the all-action midfielder did not disappoint as he powered the ball into the top corner, leaving the keeper with no chance.

That's how it finished, and after initial threat, CPR were able to overcome the Bourne challenge. The score line probably does not reflect the performance of the Bourne team, who were competitive for large periods of the game and could've had a couple more if not for the brilliance of Kevany in goal.

CPR travel to Liss next week, a team who had been struggling at the foot of the league table. In the reverse fixture, CPR smashed 9 past a hapless Liss keeper, and would undoubtedly be looking to improve their goal difference further when they take them on next week.

It was Kevany who received the man of the match. He stood up and was counted amidst pressure from Bourne, and did wonderfully to save from the opposition attackers; most notably with a brilliant one on one save with the game at 4-1.

*all credit to Bourne Blades, they were a decent team who’s attacking threat is enough to challenge any team in the league. Mark my words, they WILL pick up points off Hartley Whitney or Wokingham & Embrook this season.
