Hazard vs Ballboy - my thoughts

On the 23rd January 2013, one of the more bizarre and shameful incidents happened on a football pitch which brought back memories of that infamous karate kick by Eric Cantona on a Crystal Palace fan 18 years prior. After becoming increasingly frustrated at a ball boy whose aim it was to 'time waste,' Eden Hazard kicked the boy in frustration, which left the referee with no choice but to red card the Belgian winger. With the incident dominating Thursday mornings back pages, it could be debated who was in the wrong: the ball boy or Eden Hazard.

In my opinion, the situation could easily have been avoided and Hazard and the ball boy must both take blame for their part in the incident. The ball boy indicated on his twitter page that he was 'the king of ball boys' who's job it was to 'time waste,' and conveying his willingness to make an incident like this occur. If he, the ball boy, whose job it is to return the ball as quickly as possible, simply did his job then the incident wouldn't have unfolded in the ugly manner as it did.

That's not saying that Eden Hazard is in the right, because he is anything but. I can understand the frustration, with his team desperate to score 2 goals in the little remaining time at their disposal, and he had intentions to restart the game as soon as possible. However he let his emotions get the better of him, and his actions were shameful and disgusting and set a disgraceful example to all those that were watching. Although the kick was not malicious and was an attempt to dislodge the ball from under the ball boys grasp, Hazard's red card and subsequent punishment is fully justified.

It's a shame really, because football is already portrayed in a negative way, and this incident only fuels those that oppose the sport. Both were in the wrong, but both could've prevented the incident from occurring. The ball boy was not doing his job, and caused Eden Hazard to react in the manner that he did, and for that he could be blamed for the situation. But Hazard completely lost his temper and professionalism, and his reaction was out of order and unacceptable. With that being said, both must be held responsible for creating the controversial incident, but really it should’ve easily been avoided.
