Liverpool have had a lot of trouble in past
transfer windows, splashing out the cash with little reward. Expensive
acquisitions such as Carroll and Downing have arrived and performed well below
par, and in my opinion urgently need replacing.
Liverpool
have less than 2 days in order to wrap up any possible signings, and if they
want to finish in the top 4 for the first time for 3 years, this is what I
think they need to do.
1. SELL Jay Spearing
Jay Spearing just defines mediocrity. I love the passion and energy that Jay
brings every time he wears the red shirt, but sadly his footballing ability is
not up to scratch. Wolves and Bolton have been linked with a £3 million bid for
the out of favour midfielder, and I think that'll be a great deal for
Liverpool if that transfer is completed.

Charlie Adam could be on his way out of Anfield |
2. SELL Charlie Adam
Charlie Adam was good at Blackpool, but he has never shown that class in a
Liverpool shirt. He has fallen down the pecking order
behind Henderson and Shelvey, and now finds himself as 7th choice for a spot in
centre midfield. He is rotting on the bench and
Liverpool
need to sell if they are to add to their squad, and a fee in the region of £5
million would be an acceptable figure to let him go.
3. SELL Stewart Downing
I wasn't really a fan of Stewart Downing when he arrived from Aston Villa, and I'm
definitely not a fan of him now after an abysmal first season. £20 million for
0 goals and 0 assists in the league for a winger is completely ludicrous, and
he should've been out of the door as soon as the transfer window opened up at
the start of July.
Liverpool may be able to
push for a sale of around the £10 million mark, but I don’t see anyone wanting
to pay a lot of money for a player who has performed so poorly over the
duration of last season.
4. SELL Andy Carroll
I like Andy Carroll, but if he is going to sit on the bench and come on for the
last 10 minutes, then his talent is being wasted. His position as a target man
doesn't suit Brendan Rodgers’ passing philosophy, and therefore I believe we
should cash in before it is too late. His former club
Newcastle are rumoured to be preparing a £17
million bid, and that would be a reasonable fee for someone who still hasn't
found his feet in a red shirt.

Joe Cole has endured a torrid time with injuries since arriving
at Liverpool in 2010 |
5. SELL Joe Cole
Joe Cole has been injury prone ever since he joined Liverpool in the summer
of 2010, which led to Liverpool loaning him out to French side
Lille for last season. But Cole has featured
in 2 games since his arrival back to Merseyside; and has failed to complete
both games due to injuries. He is in my opinion a waste of space at Liverpool
and I can't see him forcing his way back into a new look
Liverpool
midfield with an abundance of quality. With Cole earning a weekly wage of
around £80,000,
Liverpool would need to sell
in order to reduce the wage bill and this money would be better spent elsewhere
on higher quality players.
6. BUY a Winger
A winger is a position that needs to be resolved at
Liverpool,
and with Downing seemingly surplus to requirements, I think the position has
become a real problem. Liverpool have failed to score goals the past season, and
a goal scoring winger would help Liverpool supply the goals they need to propel
themselves to a top 4 finish. Daniel Sturridge and Theo Walcott have been
linked, but I really like the idea of Aaron Lennon filling this vacant
position. His pace and improved final ball would be massively beneficial to the
Merseysiders in an attacking sense, and he would definitely provide the Reds
with much needed firepower on the wings.
7. BUY a goal scoring striker
Liverpool have been crying out for a goal
scorer for many seasons after the departure of Fernando Torres, but the Spaniard
has never been replaced. With Suarez somewhat incapable of scoring clear cut
chances, a poacher would be tremendously effective for the Reds. Huntelaar is
one name who I would love to see pull on a red shirt, having scored a
remarkable 48 goals in all competitions for Schalke last season. Another player
I would love to see would be Darren Bent, but whether he would be allowed to
leave
Villa Park remains to be seen.

Clint Dempsey seems as if he has his heart set on a move to
Liverpool |
8. BUY Clint Dempsey
Clint Dempsey, a proven goal scoring midfielder, would only command a fee of
around £7 million. It's hard to find goal scorers on the cheap, and if I was
Brendan Rodgers I would've secured the services of Dempsey long ago. What's
more, is that Dempsey seems to have his heart set on a move to Anfield having vowed
to never pull on a Fulham shirt again, which could lower the transfer fee even further.
He could be deployed either in the midfield 3, on the wing or as a secondary
striker, and this versatility would be extremely handy throughout the course of
this season.
So that's 8 coming-and-goings that I think should happen at
Liverpool before the end of the transfer window in 2 days
time. Although time seems to be running out, anything can happen in the dying
moments of transfer deadline day, proven on the 31st January 2011 when Carroll
joined Liverpool and Torres joined
Chelsea
in two record breaking deals. Even if Liverpool completed around 4 or 5 of
these deals I would be happy with Liverpool's business, and if that is
accomplished; then
Liverpool may well just
sneak into a Champions League spot at the expense of Arsenal come the end of
the season.
