Season Review: The Bottom Clubs (16th - 20th)

Image
16th: Aston Villa Points: 38 Won: 7 Drawn: 17 Lost: 14 GS: 37 GC: 53 GD: -16 Villa's rock at the back, James Collins A truly disappointing season for an ambitious set of fans who in the end will be relieved that they aren't playing championship football next season. Villa were once mixing it with the big boys and finishing in the Europa league places, but since Martin O'Neill's departure the team have declined massively. They've lost most of their key players, and towards the end of the season were forced to play young, inexperienced players which plunged them deep into a relegation battle. Their lost of the experienced duo Martin Petrov and Darren Bent half way through the season must’ve hit the team hard, as they quickly spiralled down the table. Although they just survived, they will be looking for star striker Darren Bent to fire them to around mid table next season. Overall Rating: 3/10 Star Man: James Collins 17th: Queen Park Rangers ...

The Outcasts

Image
Hodgson made a few controversial decisions in picking his 23 for the European Championships, choosing to leave out some key players in favour of some others who many felt didn’t deserve their place in the side. There are some who missed out, and will probably consider themselves unlucky to not make the plane to Ukraine in the summer. Alongside the ones who were not picked, there were also some others who have been unlucky with injury, and consequently have been ruled out of the upcoming tournament in the Ukraine/Poland. The players I feel are unlucky to have missed out either from injury or not picked are listed below. Not picked - NP Injury - I Micah Richards - NP (right) the mystery surrounds Micah Richards and his continous exclusion I am baffled why every England manager overlooks this colossal right back!? Richards is undoubtedly the best Right back in England , in both attack and defence, eclipsing rivals such as Walker and Johnson in many departments. The only re...

The 23 man Euro Squad

Image
Roy Hodgson's first major task since being given the England job was to pick his side for the upcoming European Championships in Poland/Ukraine. His picks have ultimately been solid, but there has been some controversy in some of his choices, leading to #HodgsonOut trending on twitter. Although this may seem largely to be a joke, his team has left out some notable absences, as well as picking some new, surprising faces. I will analyze the 23 man squad and their overall performance rating ahead of the fast approaching European Championships. Goalkeepers: Joe Hart and John Ruddy in training Joe Hart - 9 (right) One of the best Goalkeepers in the world and has had a tremendous club season. Rob Green - 7 A worthy back up and has been solid this season, shame that his International career was wrecked after 'that' howler during the 2010 world cup. John Ruddy - 5 (right) Not the greatest of keepers, has now been replaced by rookie Jack Butland due to a broke...

Roy Hodgson

Image
Despite being a huge outsider to take the position as England manager, the FA surprisingly overlooked all the competition in favour of 64 year old former West Brom manager Roy Hodgson. More surprising is the fact that fans favourite Harry Redknapp wasn't even given an interview, to the dismay of the English public. However, Hodgson's CV proves that he is no mug, and he has numerous winners medals to his name, most notably in Sweden with Malmo FF. However, despite his vast amount of managerial experience, he has not managed to lead a team with a good reputation to glory, most notable in his failure with Liverpool when he was sacked after only 6 months of employment. But that’s in the past, and now only two big questions remain. How will Hodgson fair in possibly the biggest job on earth? And will he lead England to European glory in the summer? Roy Hodgson will be looking to lead England to glory this  summer In my opinion, I don't believe Hodgson has what it tak...

Bayern Munich 1-1 Chelsea (3-4 on penalties) - Player ratings

Image
Chelsea are European Champions! Bayern Munich Manuel Neuer - 7 The big German keeper didn't have too much to do, but still couldn't prevent Didier Drogba's 88th minute equaliser. Phillip Lahm - 8 (right) The reliable German right back showed his quality once again on Saturday night. Defended solidly and provided great service in attack. Didn't deserve to be on the losing side. World class. Anatoliy Tymoshchuk - 6 A makeshift centre back for the night, he was rarely troubled and not tested at all. Very composed on the ball. Jerome Boateng - 6 Once again, not troubled for large periods of the night and looked solid in defence. However let Drogba go fatally for the goal. Diego Contento - 7 Before hand would've been identified as the weak line in the Bayern back line, but defended solidly and provided a constant attacking outlet down the left. Toni Kroos - 7 The young German prospect certainly looks like a brilliant player for the f...

Chelsea - Champions of Europe 2012

Image
The miraculous has happened. They did it. After suffering from a demoralizing defeat in 2008 to Man United in the Champions League final, Roman Abramovich and his Chelsea legion have defied all the odds to stun the world’s best teams and secure their first ever Champions League win in their history. The Chelsea fans all over the planet have waited a long time to for European domination, but they have finally achieved their long awaited goal. No more hurt, no more pain, Chelsea are European Champions. Massive credit has to go out to the whole Chelsea team for their achievements in Europe this year. Despite struggling massively in the league, the only way to compensate for what would've been a year of disappointment was to win the Champions League. And unbelievably, they achieved the impossible. When you look back to the first leg in Naples in the last 16, they looked doomed. Down and out. But the players have been helped by a change in management, with Di Matteo replacing Vil...

Papiss Cisse

Image
Words can't describe the talent that Cisse has brought to Newcastle United football club. He was originally brought to provide service to his international strike partner Demba Ba, but the goals he has provided have been exquisite. Despite being unable to speak English at all, he has jelled with his team mates immediately and has provided the club with an incredible 13 goals in 12 games, including his incredible double against Chelsea on Wednesday. He has taken the Premier League by storm, scoring left right and centre in Newcastle 's surge up the table to just outside the Champions League places.  Cisse has been celebrating frequently since his arrival from Freiburg in January He arrived under huge pressure having inherited the famous number 9 shirt that former Toon legend Alan Shearer wore. But he has more than coped with the expectation, having become the second fastest player (behind Niall Quinn) to reach 10 goals in the Premier League, in just 9 games. He has be...

FA Cup Final Preview

Image
Chelsea vs Liverpool - FA Cup Final Every semi professional and professional team entered the competition, but the teams have been whittled down to just two. Liverpool and Chelsea . Both teams have struggled in the Barclays Premier League, but thrived in the cup competitions. Liverpool will contest their second cup final of the year having already secured the Carling Cup title in February, somewhat unconvincingly on penalties against Cardiff . This is the first cup final of two for Chelsea, who will play Bayern Munich to contest the Champions League final later on in May. But Liverpool will have the slight advantage, having beaten Chelsea on their last 5 meetings, including a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge in the Carling Cup earlier this year. But this advantage will count for nothing as Chelsea have the ability to end this losing streak and win their 6th FA cup title. Despite Liverpool being 8th and Chelsea 6th in the league, both teams have earned their place in the final an...
