CPR All Stars 2-1 Bourne Blades

CPR welcomed Bourne to the fortress, who in the reverse fixture had caused a lot of problems for the leagues leading side; with the 6-2 score line not a true reflection of the games proceedings.

It was no different this time and CPR stuttered in the second half, but they held on to clinch a vital 3 points against a decent Bourne side.

The team lined up as follows:
GK: Kevany LB: Goggin CB: Hastings CB: Honeywood RB: Ross CM: Adolphous CM: Rolt LM: Parslow RM: Stroud CF: Dunnage ST: Rice

Subs: Morris, Barby, Finlay, Lloyd-Bisley, Nott

McMillan was still missing through injury, and Marsh was also absent due to player restrictions.

Earlier on in the season CPR were known for being fast out the blocks, and were given the task of scoring within the first 10 minutes.

And CPR started off brightly, playing some great football that brought back memories of their early season form.

CPR were also showing some great commitment and the effort put in was typical of this dogged side. Rice in particular was working well up front, fighting to earn CPR a number of corners and throw ins, and it seemed only a matter of time until the home side broke the deadlock.

And that was achieved roughly 20 minutes into the game, with Rolt getting on the score sheet.

A wonderful Parslow cross was smashed against the cross bar by Stroud, and Rolt latched onto the loose ball. He showed speed to get past the defender, before cooly rolling the ball into the bottom corner with his left foot.

CPR were doing well in all areas of the pitch, and were well worth their lead. Honeywood had marked Bourne's best player out the game, Ross was nullifying all attacks down the right and Parslow was also showing some neat touches down the left.

And it was the latter who doubled CPR's tally 5 minutes later. Dunnage sent a wonderful reverse pass down the right to Stroud, who beat his man with ease and sent in a dangerous low cross. It was met by Parslow, and he slid in to give CPR a well deserved 2 goal lead at half time.

However, the second half was a complete contrast to the first, and Bourne were now threatening the CPR goal without having any distinctive cutting edge.

CPR did have to defend numerous corners and throw ins, but they were repelled time and time again by a resilient CPR back line. Lloyd-Bisley and Parslow both made dramatic goal line clearances, Lloyd Bisley in particular throwing himself in front of a Bourne player to deny them what seemed like a certain goal.

But CPR were now all over the place and looked to have lost their legs, and were struggling to string 3 passes together.

Bourne kept knocking at the door, and it seemed inevitable that they would pull at least one back. This was achieved in the last minute by a Bourne attacker, who was sent through and rifled the ball into the top corner, leaving Kevany with no chance.

And Bourne had a chance to steal a point, when the ball fortunately fell to a Bourne player in the box. However he rushed his effort and blazed over, and this proved to be the last touch of the game.

CPR had come through a tough game, and their remarkable form this season continued once again with this victory. However despite achieving a valuable win, Miss Goggin was evidently unhappy with the CPR performance, ranting at the team and complaining that they were 'complacent' and 'arrogant' going into the second half.

Nevertheless, 3 points is 3 points, and this vital win means CPR are 3 points closer to clinching the title.

This 3 points holds more significance as title rivals Wokingham & Embrook were thrashed 4-1 by CPR's local rivals, Camberley Town, meaning CPR extend their lead at the top of the table to at least 6 points.

Credit to the whole back line for showing great resilience throughout the second half, and were unlucky not to come away from the game with a clean sheet. Although a man of the match was not named, I personally would’ve given the accolade to either Honeywood or Ross, both of which performed extremely well at the back throughout.
