CPR All Stars 7-1 Whitchurch United

Curly Park Rangers took their goal scoring tally to 15 after just 2 games with an emphatic 7-1 mauling of visitors, Whitchurch United.

The team lined up as follows:
GK: Kevany LB: Barby CB: Hastings CB: Nott RB: Marsh CM: Rolt CM: Adolphous LM: Parslow RM: Stroud CF: Rice ST: Lloyd-Bisley

Subs: McMillan, Morris, Finlay

Curly Park went into the game high in confidence following on from their 8-3 victory the week prior, and they raced out the blocks against a lethargic looking Whitchurch outfit. Harry LB soon found himself on the score sheet in his first game of the season, heading in a flick from midfielder James Rolt to open his tally for the season.

But Curley Park didn't have it their own way for the whole game, with Whitchurch threatening the Curley back 4 in clusters. Whitchurch did in fact restore parity, with Luke Marsh unable to close down the left winger, and the Whitchurch man smashed the ball towards goal, past a despairing dive from CPR keeper Charles Kevany and into the top corner.

But CPR reapplied the pressure, with the Whitchurch goal providing a wake up call for the players, and soon enough,CPR restored their lead. Centre back George Hastings found himself with masses of time and space upfront, and he showed great composure in caressing the ball beyond the reach of the keeper and into the bottom corner.

CPR never looked back from then on in, and really could've stretched their advantage before the quarter time break. James Stroud thought he'd scored when he clipped a free kick towards the goal, only for the Whitchurch keeper to deny him by tipping the ball over the bar. Harry LB also had a 1 on 1 before the break, but his hesitancy allowed the Whitchurch defender to get back at him and clear from danger.

CPR arguably played their best football in the second quarter, but only had 1 goal to show for their efforts. When James Stroud was cynically brought down just outside the box, George Hastings stepped up to take the resulting free kick. He smashed the ball with the perfect combination of power and finesse and the ball flew through the air and beyond the reach of the keeper from all of 20 yards, which sparked scenes of jubilance from CPR fans and players alike. But back came Whitchurch, and Charles Kevany was called into action just before the half time break, diving low to brilliantly touch the ball onto the post and ensure CPR went into the half time break with a 2 goal advantage.

The third quarter started as the second had finished; more CPR dominance. Connor McMillan, who had threatened the Whitchurch goal since his introduction in the second quarter, quickly stretched CPR's lead even further when he broke away from the opposition's defence, before firing the ball low into the corner of the net.

James Rolt also found himself on the score sheet and made the score line 5-1 when he headed the ball beyond the keeper and into the net from a James Stroud corner, to cap off a dominant display in the centre of midfield. Whitchurch looked dejected and with what seemed like an endless siege on their goal, the game was quickly turning into a rout.

But instead of showing spirit to get back into the game, Whitchurch resorted to dirty tactics, and a number of reckless fouls; notably on left back Alex Finlay, casted a shadow over the game.

But this didn't stop 2 more goals going in, with Connor McMillan doubling his tally in the game when he turned and shot the ball into the corner of the goal, and unlikely scorer Greg Morris also headed the ball home late on to put gloss on what was, a decent CPR performance.

That's how it finished, and CPR would be ecstatic in how their 2 pre season games have gone. 15 goals in 2 games, albeit against poor opposition, proves their attack may well be a vital weapon for them in the season to come.

All in all, the game didn't provide much of a test for the blads, but it did provide them with valuable match fitness needed for the opening league game against Cove next week. There was no faulting any of the CPR performances, but in the end the Man of the match award went to George Hastings. He not only scored 2 goals, but was also imperious at the back and very rarely gave the Whitchurch strikers a sniff at goal.
