Kenny Dalglish - time to go?

As a follower of Liverpool for mostly my entire life, never have I seen a Liverpool side in as much chaos and turmoil as the current one. To put it simply; they are shambles. Since the Carling Cup win in February, I expected Liverpool to push on and really challenge for a place in the top 4, but sadly, the opposite has happened. The lack of belief and determination in many of the senior players in my opinion is unacceptable. Many seem as if they are resigned to losing, feeling sorry for themselves rather than doing anything to improve the position of Liverpool Football Club. That being said, is Kenny the man to push Liverpool forward?

'The King's' Liverpool side have been particuarly
dissapointing in the Premier League this season
In January 2011, to the jubilance and excitement of Liverpool fans all across the world, Kenny 'King' Dalglish was appointed Liverpool manager. He replaced Roy Hodgson, who was extremely unpopular and his sacking was greeted with relief to many Liverpool fans. However, from that moment Liverpool seem to have stayed at the same level rather than pushing forward, and in fact Kenny Dalglish and Roy Hodgson have very similar records as Liverpool boss. Liverpool have fallen to a worrying 8th, behind Everton; showing the extent of their downfall in recent seasons. The Reds even find themselves 3 points ahead of Norwich, and 4 points above Swansea, something that seemed unimaginable a couple of years ago.

Liverpool have to readdress their league season, and fast. Liverpool’s worst run for 60 years has compounded the Reds misery, but there have been encouraging signs recently. Despite going a man down, Liverpool scored a last minute goal against relegation threatened Blackburn through the heavily criticised Andy Carroll to end their winless streak, to the relief of Liverpool fans all over the world. Liverpool also booked their place in the FA Cup final, showing tremendous spirit to overcome an in form Everton side after going 1-0 down. So there have been signs of a mini revival recently, and Liverpool fans can certainly take heart from their side’s recent performances, having shown signs of rekindling a good run of form.

Although Kenny Dalglish's side have not lived up to expectations in the league, it seems almost bizarre to say that a Liverpool team in so much trouble have had a successful season. They have already ended their 6 year cup drought, and find themselves in another final against Chelsea in May, which I think they may be able to pull off a surprise victory. Kenny had managed to secure Liverpool's passage into Europe next season as well, which is a bonus. Even though it is the Europa league, Liverpool are a extremely successful club who ought to be in Europe, and them being in the Europa league is a stepping stone for hopefully bigger things to come next season.

Luckily for Dalglish, his management of his side in the cups have been immense, but in the league his team have seemed lethargic and disappointing. Nevertheless, Dalglish is in a brilliant position to oversee a first cup double for Liverpool since 2001 where they won the treble, but Liverpool’s current league position is great cause for concern. There is no doubt Kenny is an iconic figure at the club, but his reputation is in danger of being tarnished if he cannot resurrect Liverpool's early season Premier League form. Next season Liverpool must finish in the top 5, no matter what. Otherwise, Kenny Dalglish will be on the chopping block and Liverpool fans will be waving goodbye to the King.
